On Thursday Marcus brought in a birds nest that he had found at home. He explained that he found it in his yard, and that it fell out of a tree. We guessed that it belonged to a bird (les oiseaux), and that it may have had eggs in it (les oeufs). Elijah predicted that it may have belonged to a Robin and Audrina agreed. When we did some research, we figured he may be right!
We quickly started asking more questions, here are a few:
- What type of bird lives here? Answer: We think it was a Robin
- Are all bird eggs the same colour?-Isabelle Answer: No, Robin's eggs are blue.
- How do eggs become birds?-Claire Answer: After the parents sit on the egg for 12-14 days, the bird uses it's egg tooth to break the egg, and then pushes it's way out. It can take a long time and sometimes the bird needs to rest.
- How do the baby birds learn how to fly?-Madelynn Answer: They leave the nest to get food. They try to fly and often fall a lot, just like we do when we're learning how to walk. After some practise, they get better!
- When do the eggs hatch? Teagan Answer: in 12-14 days after they are laid. Did you know that Robins lay 1 egg a day and usually lay about 3 eggs.
We found these answers on Pebblego.com, by watching these videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDKgLfWheoI , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vL_2rF8JHU, and learn.org
First the students wrote down their questions, next we did some research on the iPad, next they drew a picture to answer their questions (with some words), and finally we put them up on a bulletin board to share with everyone.
Some quotes from our learning:
"Once I was a nest with blue eggs in it"-Isabelle
"I found blue eggs in my driveway once" -Lauren
