Don't forget that tomorrow, April 23, is picture day. Please remember that the colour green will interfere with the backgrounds so please dress your child in alternate colours. 

Reminders

This week we have a lot going on! Here are a few reminders:

Tuesday: 

-school yard cleanup, please dress children accordingly

-pizza money due, please send in your child's mail bag with a separate note stating the following: child's name and cheese or pepperoni. Please include exact change. 

Wednesday: 

-pizza day for those who have ordered it yesterday

- earth day assembly at 9:10 am

Thursday:

-spring photos, wear a special outfit but NO GREEN please. It interferes with the backgrounds. 

School Yard Clean-up

Dear Parents/Guardians,
Our kindergarten classes will be doing a yard clean-up on Tuesday, April 21, 2015, as part of our studies about showing respect for the environment. We have been discussing different ways to save the environment, such as recycling, not littering, and reusing materials. As an Eco School, we thought this was the perfect opportunity to get students involved in the care of our school community. The students will be provided with a rubber glove and safety instructions related to what materials may be picked up. Please send your child to school wearing appropriate clothing for this activity.  Your support in encouraging your child’s efforts would be greatly appreciated.

Lundi l'art-Kandinsky

This week we learned about the art of Wassily Kandinsky.  He used paint in many different colours to make his artwork.  He painted using squares and circles. He would paint different coloured circles inside each other and they made a grid pattern.  We painted our own circles on squares of paper and we attached them together to create one big work of art!  It turned out to be really beautiful!

We also watched a story about a little girl who also became an artist by painting circles.

3D Shapes-Part 2

This week we continued to work with 3D shapes in order to become more familiar with them.

We also leaned positional words by singing the following song:

Sur, sous, devant, derrière,

Devant, derrière,

Devant, derrière. 

Sur, sous, devant, derrière,

Dans,

A côté de.  

Here Peyton is putting the baby on (sur) the chair.  

Below you can see us testing the shapes to see if they roll (roule) or slide (glisse) down the ramp.

Next we talked about the different 2D shapes that we see on our 3D figures.  We did this puzzle to help us figure it out!

Finally we played a back to back building game where we sat back to back and used our French vocabulary to name the shape and explain where to put it (sur, sous, à côté de, etc.). We liked this game a lot! 

Eco Presentation

.On Monday we had and ECO presentation and we learned a lot about recycling. We learned that anything you put in the garbage goes to the landfill and that it stays there for years and years. We were told that Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is stated in order of importance with Reduce being the most important. We are now "recycling minions" and we will be doing our best to recycle wherever we go. 

For the red box, we learned "If you can rip it, you can recycle it". 

This means paper, popcorn bags, paper towels, wrapping paper, and our harvest fresh lids. 

For the blue box, we learned that many plastic, glass and aluminum items can go in there. You can also put lunchable containers, juice boxes, dirty harvest fresh aluminum containers as long as you try to scrape out the food, and so much more! 

Additionally we learned that: 

• You should reuse plastic cutlery

• You should avoid all Styrofoam as it takes billions of years to decompose

Things that cannot go in the recycle bin:

Kool-Aid jammers, straws, wrappers and food. 

Students were encouraged to have a voice and to remind adults to recycle. 

You can help your child at home by discussing materials that you recycle at home and by encouraging reducing and reusing by packing garbage free lunches in r usable containers or reduced waste lunches.

In the week to come, we will be continuing to learn about reducing, reusing, recycling and the things we can do to help our planet.  

Looking for Recycled Materials

Next week, we are going to be building 3D structures using recycled materials.  We are looking for small boxes, containers, paper towel tubes, etc. that we can recycle into art.  We are especially looking for items that are shaped like cubes, rectangular prisms, spheres, cylinders, pyramids, and cones.  Please note that we are unable to use egg cartons, toilet paper roles and meat trays for health reasons.  

Anything you are able to donate is greatly appreciated.
