Bird's Nest Inquiry

On Thursday Marcus brought in a birds nest that he had found at home.  He explained that he found it in his yard, and that it fell out of a tree.  We guessed that it belonged to a bird (les oiseaux), and that it may have had eggs in it (les oeufs).  Elijah predicted that it may have belonged to a Robin and Audrina agreed.  When we did some research, we figured he may be right!

We quickly started asking more questions, here are a few:
  1. What type of bird lives here? Answer: We think it was a Robin
  2. Are all bird eggs the same colour?-Isabelle Answer: No, Robin's eggs are blue.
  3. How do eggs become birds?-Claire Answer: After the parents sit on the egg for 12-14 days, the bird uses it's egg tooth to break the egg, and then pushes it's way out.  It can take a long time and sometimes the bird needs to rest.
  4. How do the baby birds learn how to fly?-Madelynn Answer: They leave the nest to get food.  They try to fly and often fall a lot, just like we do when we're learning how to walk.  After some practise, they get better!
  5. When do the eggs hatch? Teagan Answer: in 12-14 days after they are laid.  Did you know that Robins lay 1 egg a day and usually lay about 3 eggs.

First the students wrote down their questions, next we did some research on the iPad, next they drew a picture to answer their questions (with some words), and finally we put them up on a bulletin board to share with everyone.

Our New Caterpillars

On Friday, a package was delivered to our Kindergarten classroom.  It was the butterfly kits that we ordered.  Mlle Ouellette and Mlle Benneian's class divided the caterpillars into containers and put them in our net.  When we came back to school on Tuesday, we could see that they started eating.  They ate and they ate.  On Thursday we decided it was time to clean the waste out of their homes.  Our students sat down to Mlle Benneian to learn about the caterpillars, then they got to work cleaning out the frass and webbing using a paint brush and gentle hands.  Stay tuned to see what happens next!

Some predictions

This caterpillar kept crawling on our friend!

Our School Play: Shrek Jr.

Today we got to see our school play Shrek Jr.  It was very well done and we all really enjoyed it.  The play will be presented Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night of this week at 7:00 p.m. and it's not too late to buy tickets! Tickets are $5 and can be ordered in advance or at the door.  Please come and see our talented students in action!

My favourite part was when the dragon chased Donkey

"The end was the best part because I saw all the ones that we already did and I liked them.  I liked the wedding dress." Avery

After the play almost every student chose to draw their favourite part.  Ask your child what they drew!
