What can you learn from a treasure map?

This week we read the book pictured below about a pirate who had to follow a treasure map to get to the treasure. We learned that when writing how many paces to take, it can be different based on your height (measurement concept) and that it is therefore important to include visible landmarks on your map along with the directions. Students also practiced the French directional vocabulary of gauche, droit, devant and en arrière. Finally we discussed the importance of orienting the map before you start as maps can be quite confusing otherwise. On Friday students drew their own maps and gave them to their friends to see if they could find the selected treasure.
