On mesure une citrouille

Today we gave students this prompting question: Combien de cubes mesure la citrouille?
We prompted them to look at the cubes as well as at the height of the pumpkin to make an educated guess of how many cubes it would take to equal the height of the pumpkin.

We estimated how many cubes it would take to measure our pumpkin, then we tested our theories.  We found that our pumpkin measured 13 cubes tall.  We looked back at our answers to see which guesses were trop grand (too big) and which guesses were trop petit (to small).  We found that Kevin was right on. Bravo Kevin!

We added the cubes and counted them in French as we went.  Your child should be able to count 10 objects (moving them one at a time) all in French.  Tonight give your child 10 objects and ask them to show you how they count in French.  Be sure to say BRAVO when they do a great job!

Here are our estimations and our conclusions.

Next we looked at the circumference of the pumpkin.  We decided to measure it with string.

Some of us thought that the pumpkin was bigger around than it is tall.
The rest of the class guessed that the pumpkin was smaller around than it is tall.
Use the picture above to discuss what we found.
